What Career and Marriage Have in Common

Today I attended a career fair at my university, and one of my professors was invited to speak at the event. He explained the difference between a job and a career: a job is something that you do from 9-5 so you can have the money to do something else, and a career is what you want and love to do with your life and you never have to look at the clock to see if it's time to go home. According to him, in order to have a career, you have to convince yourself that you love what you do, and he presented an interesting analogy along the lines of this: "Do I really love my wife? Well, I don't really know, but I convince myself that I do so I can stay married." I thought that was a rather unusual take on marriage, and I also think that it's worthy to point out that my professor has confessed himself that he has been married three times and divorced twice.

After a few seconds of thought, I wasn't sure it would be wise to take his advice. Sure, it's important to love what you do and love whom you marry, but I'd make sure that I love something because I really love it, not because I convinced myself that I do.
